چکیده

S OF PAPERS Twentieth Annual Albert L. Tester Memorial Symposium, 27-28 April 1995 1 The Albert L. Tester Memorial Symposium is held in honor of Professor Albert L. Tester, who, at the time of his death in 1974, was senior professor of zoology at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. The faculty and students of the Department of Zoology proposed an annual symposium of student research papers as a means of honoring, in a continuing and active way, Dr. Tester's lively encouragement of student research in a broad range of fields in biology. Papers reporting original research in any aspect of biology solicited from graduate students at the university are presented at the spring-semester symposium. Income from contributions to the Albert L. Tester Memorial Fund of the University of Hawai'i Foundation provides two prizes for the best papers. Judges include representatives of the Department of Zoology faculty, winners from the preceding symposium, and a distinguished scholar from another university who also presents a major symposium address. This year Mimi A. R. Koehl, Professor of Integrative Biology, University of California at Berkeley, participated in the symposium. Relative influence of climate variability and direct anthropogenic impact on a sub-tropical Pacific top predator, the Hawaiian monk seal

Abundance trends of Hawaiian monk seals Monachus schauinslandi at 6 subpopulations throughout the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) have fluctuated considerably during the past 5 decades. Direct human impacts have been widely accepted as the primary cause of previous monk seal population declines and, consequently, much conservation effort has focused on minimizing these threats. Yet climate...

Non-lethal efforts to deter shark predation of Hawaiian monk seal pups

1. More than a decade of shark predation on nursing and newly weaned pups of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal (Monachus schauinslandi) has significantly contributed to a steep decline of the French Frigate Shoals (FFS)

Estimating the carrying capacity of French Frigate Shoals for the endangered Hawaiian monk seal using Ecopath with Ecosim

The carrying capacity of the French Frigate Shoals (FFS) region for the endangered Hawaiian monk seal was appraised using an updated version of the original FFS Ecopath model (Polovina 1984). Model parameters were updated using recent literature, and data from surveys of the seal population and its bottom-associated prey. Together they produced a static mass balance model for 1998 when the prey...

Biogeography and taxonomy of extinct and endangered monk seals illuminated by ancient DNA and skull morphology

Extinctions and declines of large marine vertebrates have major ecological impacts and are of critical concern in marine environments. The Caribbean monk seal, Monachus tropicalis, last definitively reported in 1952, was one of the few marine mammal species to become extinct in historical times. Despite its importance for understanding the evolutionary biogeography of southern phocids, the rela...

Thermoregulatory Behavior of the Hawaiian Monk Seal (

The behavior of Hawaiian monk seals at French Frigate Shoals was studied in order to obtain information on their adaptation to a tropical climate. The seals were unable to remain on the dry beach platform during the day except during very high winds, extensive cloud cover, or rain. The seals characteristically moved down to wet sand on the beach slope during the day and returned to the beach pl...
